The United States has a vast wilderness that is ready for you to explore! And who doesn’t love to share photographs of their adventures on Instagram (or Facebook)? From wildly popular destinations to the lesser known, we created a list of the top hikes around the country each with its own unique beauty worth capturing.
1. Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls Trail, Arizona
The clear blue waters of Havasu Falls have quickly pushed it into the limelight as an international destination. Havasu Falls is located in the Havasupai Tribal Reservation in the Grand Canyon. The hike is 10+ miles each way that starts with steep descent into the canyon. Reservations are required for this two-day hike and have become a bit of a golden ticket, so be sure to plan in advance!
2. White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire
A hike through the White Mountain National Forest is the best way to enjoy the colorful fall foliage of New England. There is not one specific hike you have to do, rather drive through the mountains and pull over at one of the many trailheads.
3. Thorofare Ridge Trail, Denali National Park, Alaska
Denali National Park is one of the largest in the country and home to Denali, the highest mountain in North America. The Thorofare Ridge Trail starting at the Eilson Visitor Center for breathtaking views of Denali and the panoramic tundra.
4. Notch Trail, Bandlands National Park, South Dakota
The short Notch Trail takes you up a log ladder to the best panoramic views of the White River Valley. Get up close and personal with many of the interesting formations that Badlands National Park has to offer.
5. Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho
With over 1,000 miles of trail, Sawtooth National Forest has a hike for everyone. The Alice-Toxaway Loop takes you along several alpine lakes and mountainous peaks. This hike takes around three days, with the ability to sleep near a reflective lake each night.
6. Hanakapi’ai Trail, Hawaii
When you hear Hawaii, you often think just of its sandy beaches, but these islands also offer some fantastic hiking opportunities. The hike to Hanakapi’ai Falls does bring you through a beach, but the waterfall alone is worth the walk. Tip: Bring along your bathing suit to enjoy a refreshing dip beneath the waterfall!
7. Hanging Lake, Colorado
Hanging Lake features beautiful clear, green blue water with a backdrop of Bridal Veil Falls. The 2.5 round trip hike might sound like a breeze, but Hanging Lake is perched 7,323 ft. above sea level, meaning sturdy hiking shoes are required. Try the Hubbard Mt. Tam hiking boots for extra support and comfort!
8. Half Dome Trail, Yosemite, California
Get ready to hike up an almost vertical rock face. The Half Dome hike is one of the most iconic in Yosemite and there is a great reason for that, it is beautiful. Along the hike you pass many waterfalls and sprawling vistas. Make sure your phone is fully charged to keep your friends jealous!
9. Delicate Arch Trail, Arches National Park, Utah
A visit to the colorful Arches National Park needs to be on everyone’s bucket list. Out of the 200+ stone arches in the park, a hike to the most famous Delicate Arch is a must-see. Snap some Instagram worthy shots here, but make sure to check out the other natural features for some less crowded photos.
10. Keyhole Route, Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Depending on the season, there are many great hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park. The summer and fall tend to be the best season to hike the park, as the spring and winter can have snowfall! Follow the Keyhole Route up Longs Peak to get your first Colorado 14er under your belt.
